Having Outdoor Adventure in Tobago Including Turtle Watching and Turtle Nesting

Tobago is not a big island, which is placed in the Caribbean. It is considered to be the last untouched islands. This makes it an excellent place for having your vacation here, especially if you like outdoor adventure. It is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and colorful reefs in the Caribbean. These aqua environment are some of the most prominent spots on the Earth.

If you dive in the reefs of Tobago, you have an excellent opportunity of speculating marine turtles swimming among the reefs, especially hawksbill turtle. They choose special places for living, such as clear waters of coastal bays and on the coral reefs where they can consume corals, sponges and other plankton.

Green turtles are other types of turtles that can be noticed if you dive in the ocean here. Identically to hawksbill turtles they are also registered in the endangered species list. They prefer warm shallow water for living where there is a lot of sea grass. They have precious meat and shell.

If you are snorkeling into the reefs of Tobago, observing turtles will bring you lots of joy and fun. Every year the turtles lay their eggs and it is even more exciting time for speculating these creatures. A leatherback turtle join them in nesting.

The leatherback turtle is the biggest turtle nesting in Trinidad and Tobago due to its size. They have a black rubbery shell like leather with seven narrow crumples. These big turtles are floating in the ocean eating jelly fish. It is interesting that leatherback turtles always come back to the same beach where they were born for laying the eggs.

On the beach the turtle digs an egg chamber with her fins and then lay between 80 to 100 eggs. After laying, the female leatherback turtle covers up the place with sand and hides the chamber making the place narrow. A turtle will come back to this place for eight times while nesting time.

The nesting period of turtles lasts from January to September. In May and June there is the highest concentration of nesting turtles. Nesting is performed at night, nonetheless some turtles can be noticed during the day.

The beaches valued by all three of these turtles for nesting are that ones with a steep profile reversed by a flat sandy crest during big tides. On the western side of Tobago, there are major turtle beaches where they perform nesting.

Grafton Beach, Stonehaven Bay, Grange Bay, Turtle Beach and Courland are the most famous turtle beaches.

Observing turtle hatching is one of the most joyful things after nesting and it is also an excellent adventure. Small turtles begin hatching about 60 days after the eggs have been laid. After they hatch, small turtles swarm up the sand on the beach and delve into the water at once. After they have delved into the sea, the small turtles go deeper.
